The smallest number of pixels needed to describe a font is 5x5, which allows for all the lines and spaces to show letters like E and G. I wanted to design a type face that used a 3x3 grid. To do this, I used lighter pixels for the parts of the letter that would otherwise appear solid. Later I replaced those gray pixels with disks.
